Stage 3 - Power Steering : The Plan That Failed

The 1961 volvo doesn't have power steering. With SR20DET, the car's getting heavier. So i plan to install a power steering unit in. my mechanic said that it's doable (and he has done it before). So i spent RM500 for Honda CRV power steering unit and installed it in.

As you can see above the unit was replaced a bit further from its original place and the original arm was chopped to align it.

After the unit and arms were welded together, a funny thing happened. The front tyres turn to the oposite directions the steering was turned. STOOPID mistake. And the mechanic? Done it before - My ass!

by this time my baby has already about 5 months at this workshop. No time to waste. My decision : Re-fit the original steering unit (no power steering but it does turn to the right directions. Hahaha).

I will install the steering (if it's even possible) at other place. I just want the engine running asap.

  4. Nice project! People over here have succesfully build in electrical power steering into an Amazon from a Vauxhaul/Chevrolet Corsa, Buick Sail, Holden Barina type B. It involves cutting the steering shaft in 2 and welding the power steering between the the parts. A controller available from Ebay fakes the speed signal normally coming form the ECU.

    Maybe this helps!!

    Cheers from the Netherlands,
